Research Creation
“Research-creation can be described as the complex intersection of art practice, theoretical concepts, and research. It is an experimental practice that cannot be predicted or determined in advance.

Research-creation is attuned to processes rather than the communication of outputs or products.“
Reading of Against Method by Manning (2015)

A reference to the threshold or fissure,

“Research-creation embraces the leap, and radical empiricism proposes a technique to compose with it across transversal fields of inquiry. What emerges across this cleft cannot be mapped in advance.”

cleft: a space or opening made by or as if by splitting : fissure
“Radical empiricism refutes the opposition between real and unreal, suggesting that the quality of experience—its redness and warmth—is as real as its molecular composition.“Manning (2015)

Radical empiricism, a theory of knowledge and a metaphysics (theory of Being) advanced by William James, an American pragmatist philosopher and psychologist, based on the pragmatic theory of truth and the principle of pure experience, which contends that the relations between things are at least as real as the things themselves, that their function is real, and that no hidden substrata are necessary to account for the various clashes and coherences of the world.( Brittanica https://www.britannica.com/topic/radical-empiricism)“

“what I am calling research-creation. Here there is no question, it seems to me, that what is at stake is the very redefinition of knowledge, for what research-creation does is ask us to engage directly with a process that, in many cases, will not be or cannot be articulated in language.” Manning (2015)

A creative event

What is starting up?

Model Teacher Question_________________________ Student response/answer
Do this________________ get this through the experience
We activate and stir so there is no distinguishing between the knowledge and the experience
In-thought
Thinking-in-the-act
Act- action- activate suggests movement- embodied learning

Stirring- activating is the act or event
Distruption- standing back
Challenge reflection

Experimental practices permit layered responses- a temporal moment to cut through in between the layers- or the fissure between the layers.
Operating on more cuts/paths at once at the same time- rhizome- richness

Place feelings in-objects to detach – explore – then re-assemble

Research creation permits a path of experience which challenges pedagogical models of information/content delivery permitting unpredictability.

Unpredictability is problematic as it is not quantifiable within current models.

Think-in-movement: The aim of research-creation is not to reflect on something that has passed. Thinking-in-movement is to think in the act; it is a thinking saturated with rhythm and affect. From Propositions for Research-Creation (By Stephanie Springgay and Sarah E. Truman, 2016).

HYBRID- definition
• Something of mixed origin or composition, such as a word whose elements are derived from different languages.
• Something having two kinds of components that produce the same or similar results, such as a vehicle powered by both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine as sources of power for the drivetrain.

Hybrid Learning in covid-19 times ON/OFF line
How is our HYBRID different?
Hybrid related to production- similar results- similar knowledge- reproducing what-there -already-was!! PROBLEM
Propositions-
An event that creates concepts that problematize

Research-creation as a way in
Drawing upon the concept of research-creation helped us to explore ways of enacting methods that bring to life the properties of space as dynamic, open-ended, in process.
Arts-based research, arts-informed research,arts-based research a/r/tography, critical arts-based inquiry, research creation are all terms that have been used to describe research that draws upon arts and humanities in studies of human life.

It moves across and between disciplines and is used by artists and designers who incorporate a hybrid form of artistic practice between the arts and science, or social science research; and educators interested in developing curriculum and pedagogy grounded in cultural production.
